Mexico off the beaten path: Oaxaca from the city to the coast
Oaxaca state is one of the easiest places in Mexico to travel independently and well. The best eating happens in covered markets and at weekly village tianguis, the mineral pools at Hierve el Agua are a day trip by colectivo, and since the Barranca Larga-Ventanilla highway opened in February 2024 the Pacific coast is about three to three and a half hours from Oaxaca City by bus instead of six to ten. These guides take you from the city's markets to the beaches at Puerto Escondido and Mazunte without a car.
Who this suits
This trip suits you if you are happy to eat at shared market tables, travel on buses, shared vans and open-back colectivo pickups, and want beach time without a resort. It also suits light packers: colectivo pickups have no luggage hold. There is no Uber anywhere in Oaxaca State, so carry pesos for taxis, colectivos and small guesthouses, many of which take cash only.
Best time to go
The dry season, roughly late October to April, is the most reliable time for both the city and the coast. From November to April you can also add a whale-watching boat trip from Puerto Escondido. The city's rainy season runs from about May to September, but mornings are usually clear, so an early-start trip still works. On the coast, June to October brings afternoon storms, and landslide clean-up is the most common cause of delays on the highway. Hierve el Agua's pools are fullest and the landscape greenest after the rains, from about October into early winter. In the dry season some visitors find only a trickle at the spring. Two festival windows push up prices: Día de Muertos (October 31 to November 2), when hotels book up months ahead, and the Guelaguetza in July.
How the trip fits together
Base yourself in Oaxaca City first, then head to the coast and finish with a direct van or bus back, or fly out of Puerto Escondido or Huatulco.
| Stop | Time to allow | Getting there | Highlights |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oaxaca City | At least 4 full days | Start here | Mercado 20 de Noviembre, mole, a Sunday at Tlacolula market, mezcal villages |
| Hierve el Agua | Day trip | Colectivo via Mitla or a tour from the city | Mineral pools and petrified rock "falls"; check status first |
| Puerto Escondido | 3 nights | ADO bus or shared van, about 3 to 3.5 hours, roughly 350 to 480 pesos | Carrizalillo cove, beginner surf lessons, lagoon tours |
| Mazunte | 3 nights | Bus and colectivo east along the coast, about 1.5 to 2 hours | Punta Cometa sunsets, the turtle center, San Agustinillo and Zipolite |
