6 Days in Colombia's Coffee Region: Salento, Filandia and Manizales
A six-day route through Colombia's coffee region, from the Cocora Valley wax palms to Filandia and the hot springs near Manizales, with 2026 costs.
Six days is enough to see the best of Colombia's coffee region without rushing: two nights in Salento for the Cocora Valley wax palms, two in Filandia for a quieter town and a working coffee farm, and two near Manizales for hot springs and cloud forest. Fly into Pereira or Armenia, keep cash in pesos, and plan your outdoor time for mornings, when the weather is most reliable.
Before you book: a note on the August 2026 earthquake
A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia on August 10, 2026. Pereira's airport closed for more than two weeks before reopening with reduced gates, and some hotels across the region closed as a precaution. Salento reported no restrictions by late August, and the Cocora Valley trails and jeeps were reported running. Confirm with each hotel and your airline before you lock in dates, and check the latest local guidance on arrival.

Days 1 and 2: Salento and the Cocora Valley
Salento is the busiest town in the region for a reason: it sits about 10 to 11 km from the Cocora Valley, home of the towering Quindío wax palm, Colombia's national tree. Arrive on day 1, walk Calle Real and the Alto de la Cruz viewpoint, and get to bed early.
On day 2, take a shared Willys jeep from the main square. Jeeps start running around 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. and leave once full; the ride takes 20 to 30 minutes. Reported 2026 fares are about 5,000 to 7,000 COP each way, or about 12,000 COP return.
The full loop is roughly 12 to 13 km with 600 to 760 m of climbing and takes 5 to 7 hours. Start early: clouds often roll in over the ridges by early afternoon. Private landowners charge small cash fees along the way. Reported May 2026 figures:
- Finca El Portón checkpoint: about 10,000 COP
- Finca La Esperanza and the palm forest section: about 30,000 COP
- Acaime hummingbird reserve (optional, about 2 extra hours): about 20,000 COP, including a hot drink
Carry 100,000 to 120,000 COP in cash per person. There is no useful ATM at the trailhead, so withdraw in Salento. If you only want the palms, the short route from the trailhead takes 1 to 2.5 hours. Last shared jeeps back usually leave between about 5:30 and 6 p.m.; confirm on the day.
Days 3 and 4: Filandia and a coffee farm
Spend the morning of day 3 on a coffee farm tour near Salento. Small family farms typically charge 35,000 to 60,000 COP for a two- to three-hour tour that follows the bean from plant to cup. Book directly where you can. If a tour costs well over 100,000 COP, you are likely paying for a packaged experience rather than a working farm.
In the afternoon, move to Filandia, about 20 km away by bus or a roughly 30-minute taxi. Filandia has the same painted balconies as Salento with far fewer tour groups. On day 4:
- Climb the Colina Iluminada viewpoint tower for a view over the coffee hills. Reported entry ranges from about 4,000 to 12,000 COP, so bring small bills.
- Browse the basket-weaving workshops, a local craft tradition.
- Walk the rural roads around town at sunrise, when the valleys fill with mist.
Day 5: Santa Rosa de Cabal hot springs
Head north toward Manizales and break the journey at the Termales de Santa Rosa de Cabal, thermal pools fed by mountain water at the base of a tall waterfall. Reported entry is around 50,000 to 70,000 COP depending on the day and which complex you choose. Weekdays are calmer.
Drive times between Pereira, Santa Rosa and Manizales vary with traffic and road works, so leave buffer time and avoid arriving in Manizales after dark on mountain roads.
Day 6: Manizales and the high mountains
Manizales sits on a ridge with views of the Andes on clear mornings. Options for your last day:
- Cloud forest walks at the reserves on the city's edge, good for birdwatching.
- Los Nevados National Natural Park. Entry through the Potosí sector is reported at 68,000 COP for foreign visitors in 2026, a vehicle fee is added, and every visit must go with a registered guide or operator. Nevado del Ruiz is an active volcano, so which areas are open depends on the current alert level. Check with Parques Nacionales Naturales and the Servicio Geológico Colombiano before you book. Altitude above 3,900 m is serious, so this is not a good first-day activity.
From Manizales, return to Pereira for your flight out, or continue toward Medellín by bus.

When to go
It rains in every month. Long-term records show July and August as the driest stretch, with December to February also relatively dry; April, May, October and November are usually the wettest. Whatever the season, hike early and pack a rain jacket.
Bottom line
Base yourself in three towns instead of one, carry cash for the Cocora fees, and start every outdoor day early. Confirm hotels and park access close to your dates, especially after this year's earthquake, and you will see the region at its best.
