Medellín Beyond the Hype: An Honest Guide
What Medellín is actually like — beyond the digital nomad hype.
The Real Medellín
Medellín has become South America's hottest destination. The weather is perfect — 70-80°F year-round. Costs are low. The metro is clean and safe. The transformation from its violent past is remarkable.
Neighborhoods
Laureles: The sweet spot. Residential, tree-lined, excellent restaurants, growing coworking scene without tourist markup. Where long-term expats live.
El Poblado: Tourist and nomad epicenter. Parque Lleras has great nightlife but feels like a bubble. Prices 30-50% higher.
Envigado: South of El Poblado, more local feel, excellent food, lower prices.
Safety
Broadly safe with normal precautions. Main risk is petty theft (phone snatching). Use Uber/InDriver instead of street taxis. Never accept food or drinks from strangers.
Budget
A comfortable month: $1,200-1,800 including apartment ($400-600), food ($300-500), transport ($50-80), and entertainment ($200-300).
